Why Miami applicants need DGSFP-registered cover

The Spanish Consulate General in Miami, located at 2655 Le Jeune Road, Suite 203, Coral Gables, FL 33134, processes long-stay visa applications for U.S. citizens and Florida-resident foreign nationals. Its jurisdiction stretches across Florida, the southeastern United States and most of the Caribbean — one of the busiest consular regions for Spanish residency applications anywhere in North America.

For any visa lasting more than 90 days — the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), Student Visa or family reunification — the Miami consulate requires private health insurance that meets strict Spanish criteria. The policy must come from an insurer registered with Spain's Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones (DGSFP), with full medical cover, no copayments for NLV applicants, full repatriation, and a minimum of 12 months running from your intended date of entry into Spain.

U.S. health plans — Aetna, Blue Cross, Cigna, United, Florida Blue — do not qualify, even with international riders. They are not DGSFP-registered, they exclude residency, and the Miami consulate rejects them on sight. Travel insurance from a U.S. carrier is also a non-starter for long-stay visas.

247 Expat Insurance is fully DGSFP-compliant and works with applicants from Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, New Orleans, San Juan and across the Caribbean every week. We issue bilingual English/Spanish certificates normally within 24 hours — in time for your BLS International USA appointment or in-person Coral Gables submission, regardless of where hurricane season has scattered your schedule.

What the Miami consulate expects on your policy

The exact wording on your certificate matters. These six points are non-negotiable for most long-stay visa categories processed through Coral Gables and BLS International USA.

Public-system equivalent cover

Your private policy must mirror the cover provided by Spain's Sistema Nacional de Salud — outpatient, hospital, emergency and specialist care included.

Unlimited or €30,000+ medical

Unlimited medical cover is preferred. Where capped, the limit must comfortably exceed the €30,000 Schengen minimum — Miami caseworkers expect a generous ceiling.

No copayments (NLV)

For Non-Lucrative Visa applicants the policy must show zero copayments — you pay nothing at point of service. Any copay tier triggers an automatic refusal.

Repatriation included

Medical repatriation to the U.S. (and repatriation of remains where relevant) must be written into the policy, not sold as a separate travel rider.

Schengen-wide scope

Valid across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Spain. The certificate must show the territorial scope clearly — "Spain plus Schengen Area".

Full year from arrival

Cover must run for at least 12 months from your intended Spanish entry date, with no gap between BLS USA submission, consulate decision and your eventual move.

Who applies through the Miami consulate

Miami's jurisdiction is one of the most diverse in the Spanish consular network. We place cover for clients across Florida, the Gulf coast, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and most of the Caribbean — from snowbird retirees to bilingual Cuban-American families and Puerto Rican remote workers.

  • Florida and Caribbean retirees relocating to the Costa del Sol on the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)
  • Miami-based remote workers and freelancers applying for the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) under Spain's Startups Law
  • Bilingual Cuban-American, Venezuelan, Colombian and Puerto Rican applicants pursuing dual residency in Spain
  • Students from the University of Miami, UF, FSU and Caribbean universities heading to Spanish degree or language programs (Student Visa)
  • Family reunification applicants joining a relative already holding Spanish residencia
  • Self-employed entrepreneurs combining the DNV with Spanish autónomo registration
  • Second-home owners in Mallorca, Marbella or Valencia formalizing residency through the NLV route
  • Dependent spouses and minor children added to a primary visa holder's long-stay application

Common mistakes that delay Miami applications

We see the same handful of issues cause rejections every month from BLS International USA and the Coral Gables office. Avoid these and your file moves through cleanly.

  • Submitting a U.S. health plan certificate (Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross, Florida Blue) instead of a DGSFP-registered Spanish policy — an automatic rejection at BLS USA
  • Choosing a Spanish policy with copayments when applying for the NLV — Miami caseworkers flag this within minutes
  • Using a U.S. travel insurance product (Allianz, AIG, World Nomads) for a long-stay residency visa — valid for tourism only
  • Submitting an English-only certificate without the parallel Spanish version the consulate expects
  • Booking a BLS USA appointment before you have your insurance certificate in hand — common during hurricane season when slots get rescheduled
  • Forgetting that cover must be active on the date of submission, not just on your intended arrival date in Spain
  • Name mismatches between the certificate and the U.S. passport — middle names and suffixes (Jr., III) must match exactly
  • Relying on private hospital plans that exclude primary care or specialist consultations — the consulate reads these as incomplete

Why Miami applicants choose 247 Expat Insurance

We're not a generic comparison site or a U.S. travel broker. We're a Spanish-resident specialist that issues consulate-ready certificates for the Miami jurisdiction every working day — including weekends when Atlantic storms force last-minute schedule changes.

DGSFP-Registered

All policies we place are with insurers registered under Spain's DGSFP — the regulatory standard the Miami consulate verifies against.

Bilingual EN/ES Service

Native English and Spanish speakers handle your file end-to-end. Useful for the Latin American expat communities Miami serves.

Open 7 Days

BLS USA reschedules due to a hurricane warning? We're online weekends and U.S. holidays to reissue or rebook your certificate fast.

Same-Day Certificate

Standard turnaround is 24 hours. Most Miami applicants have their bilingual certificate the same working day.

Consulate-Familiar

We know what Coral Gables caseworkers expect on the certificate — the wording, the dates, the Schengen scope, the bilingual format.

BLS USA-Ready Format

Certificates formatted for direct upload to BLS International USA, with no re-work and no formatting errors at submission.

From the first WhatsApp message through to your certificate landing in your inbox, you deal with one Spanish-resident broker who actually understands the Miami consulate's standards. We've placed cover for snowbird retirees in Coral Gables, bilingual remote workers in Brickell, students heading from Gainesville to Salamanca, Puerto Rican families relocating to Valencia, and Cuban-American couples buying second homes in Mallorca — the visa categories and the geography both change, but the consulate's evidentiary standard does not. We keep that standard front and center on every certificate we issue.

Miami consulate — frequently asked questions

Do I submit at Miami directly or via BLS International USA?
Most long-stay visa categories (NLV, DNV, Student) are now lodged through BLS International USA on behalf of the Miami consulate. You'll book a slot at the BLS USA center, hand over your file, and BLS forwards it to Coral Gables. A small number of cases are still submitted in person at the consulate at 2655 Le Jeune Road — your appointment confirmation will tell you which applies. We issue certificates compatible with either submission route.
I live in Atlanta / San Juan / Charlotte — do I still go through Miami?
Yes, in most cases. Miami's jurisdiction covers Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, plus a large slice of the wider Caribbean. New York handles the Northeast and Los Angeles the West. If your home address falls inside the Miami catchment, you're a Coral Gables case — even if you fly in for the BLS USA appointment.
Can my Aetna, Cigna or Florida Blue plan satisfy the Miami consulate?
No. U.S. health plans — including international riders sold by Aetna International, Cigna Global or Florida Blue — are not DGSFP-registered and don't include Schengen-wide repatriation by default. The Miami consulate rejects U.S.-issued plans for long-stay visa purposes. You need a Spanish DGSFP-registered policy issued specifically for the NLV, DNV or Student route.
How fast can I get the certificate during hurricane season?
Standard turnaround is 24 hours from policy inception. During Atlantic hurricane season (June through November) we keep weekend cover extended because BLS USA and the consulate often reschedule appointments at short notice. If you have a rebooked Miami slot in the next 48 hours, message us on WhatsApp and we will normally have your bilingual certificate in your inbox the same working day.
I'm over 70 — can I still get cover for the NLV through Miami?
Yes. We work with Spanish insurers who accept applicants up to age 75 (and in some cases 80) with no medical examination required. Premiums rise with age, but cover is available for most Florida and Caribbean snowbird retirees. Call us or send a WhatsApp message and we'll quote in under five minutes.
Does the policy cover me on trips back to the U.S. or the Caribbean?
Yes. Our consulate-approved policies include cover in your country of origin for up to 60 days per year — useful for Thanksgiving and Christmas trips home to Miami, San Juan, Atlanta or Charlotte, or for business travel within the U.S. Outside that 60-day window your usual U.S. health plan or Medicare still applies on American soil; the policy is built to satisfy Spanish residency rules, not to replace your U.S. cover when you visit home.
