The Spanish Consulate General in Toronto, located at 2 Bloor Street East, Suite 1201, Toronto, ON M4W 1A8, processes long-stay visa applications for Canadian citizens and Canada-resident foreign nationals. Its jurisdiction historically covers Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut — with applicants in other provinces routed to Montreal or Ottawa depending on residence. For any visa lasting more than 90 days — including the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) and Schengen long-stay categories — you must submit private health insurance that meets strict Spanish criteria.
Standard Canadian provincial health cover does not satisfy the Consulate. OHIP, in particular, is not portable: under Ontario's 212-day rule, OHIP stops paying for out-of-country care after roughly seven months abroad, and the Spanish Consulate does not recognise OHIP as private cover for visa purposes. The Consulate requires a certificate of cover from an insurer registered with Spain's Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones (DGSFP), with full medical cover, no co-payments for NLV applicants, and a year of cover from your intended date of arrival in Spain.
247 Expat Insurance is fully DGSFP-compliant and works with Canadian applicants every week. We issue your certificate in English and Spanish, normally within 24 hours, so it slots straight into your VFS Global or BLS International appointment file without re-work or refusal.
Toronto applicants typically lodge their file through a VFS Global or BLS International partner centre rather than dropping paperwork at Bloor Street in person. That makes a clean, complete certificate even more important — the centre forwards your file to the Consulate, and a wording problem on the insurance document can mean a return trip, a re-booking fee, and weeks of lost time before another slot opens.
The exact wording on your certificate matters. These six points are non-negotiable for most long-stay visa categories processed through Toronto.
Your private policy must mirror the cover provided by Spain's public health service — outpatient, hospital, emergency and specialist care included.
For Non-Lucrative Visa applicants the policy must show zero co-payments and no deductibles — the applicant pays nothing at point of service.
The carrier must be authorised by Spain's Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones. Canadian PMI, OHIP top-ups and travel cover do not qualify.
Medical repatriation to Canada and, where relevant, repatriation of remains must be explicitly listed on the certificate — not sold as a separate travel add-on.
Cover must be valid across all 27 Schengen countries for the validity of your residencia, not just Spain. The certificate must show territorial scope clearly.
Cover must run for a minimum of 12 months from your intended Spanish entry date, with no gap between Toronto submission and arrival in Spain.
Our Toronto clients come from across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut — from Mississauga retirees to remote-working Torontonians and Winnipeg-based families relocating to Valencia or the Costa Blanca.
We see the same handful of issues cause re-submissions every month. Avoid these and your file moves through VFS Global or BLS International cleanly.
We're not a generic comparison site. We're a specialist Spanish-resident broker that issues consulate-ready certificates every working day.
All policies we place are with insurers registered under Spain's DGSFP — the regulatory standard the Toronto Consulate verifies against.
Native English speakers handle your file from first enquiry to certificate delivery. No translation friction, no misunderstandings, Canadian English on every email.
VFS Global slots in Toronto don't respect office hours. Neither do we — weekend and evening support is standard, not a favour.
Standard turnaround is 24 hours. Most Toronto applicants have their bilingual certificate the same working day.
We understand exactly why OHIP doesn't satisfy the Consulate — and we structure your policy to fill the gap from day one in Spain.
Direct lines to underwriters at Spain's leading private health insurers — faster amendments, faster reissues, no broker chain to slow you down.
From the first WhatsApp message through to your certificate landing in your inbox, you deal with one Spanish-resident broker who actually understands the Toronto Consulate's standards and Canada's provincial health quirks. We've placed cover for retirees in Oakville, remote workers in Liberty Village, families relocating from Mississauga to Valencia, and snowbirds swapping Florida for the Costa Blanca — the visa categories and the geography both change, but the Consulate's evidentiary standard does not. We keep that standard front and centre on every certificate we issue.
Already sorting your visa cover? Most Toronto applicants pair it with one or more of these once they arrive and collect their TIE.
Applying through a different Consulate? We support applicants right across Canada, the UK, Ireland and the United States.
