Why Sanitas is One of Our Two Primary Health Insurers

Sanitas – founded in Madrid in 1954 and now a wholly-owned member of the British-headquartered Bupa Global group – is a leading private health insurer in Spain. Through Sanitas Seguros, the group provides outpatient consultations, hospitalisation, diagnostics, dental and international cover via one of the most integrated provider networks in the country.

At 247 Expat Insurance we recommend Sanitas as one of our two primary health insurance partners (alongside Caser). The reason is simple: Sanitas has built a genuinely expat-friendly proposition. Clear English-language policy documentation, a dedicated English-speaking customer service team, visa-compliant policies pre-approved for the Non-Lucrative Visa and Digital Nomad Visa, and a global parent – Bupa – behind it.

This guide walks through the Sanitas cuadro médico, the proprietary hospital chain (Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja, Sanitas La Zarzuela, Sanitas CIMA), the partner network with Quirónsalud and HM Hospitales, the Más product family, and what to expect when you actually use a policy. Like every other insurer here, Sanitas is regulated by the DGSFP.

The Sanitas Cuadro Médico – What You Actually Get

The Sanitas cuadro médico is the official directory of doctors, specialists, hospitals and diagnostic centres that Sanitas members can use directly, with the bill going to Sanitas rather than the patient. It is one of the deepest provider networks in Spain, with particularly strong concentration in Madrid (where Sanitas owns its flagship teaching hospital), Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Málaga, the Balearics and the Canaries – and meaningful coverage even in smaller provincial capitals.

The directory is searchable on sanitas.es by province, town, specialty and provider type. For everyday primary care (GP, paediatrics, gynaecology, traumatology, dermatology, ophthalmology, ENT, cardiology) you will typically find dozens of consultas across most expat regions. The real differentiator – and the reason many expats actively choose Sanitas – is the proprietary hospital chain that members can use without referral.

Sanitas-Owned Hospitals and Partner Agreements

Unlike most Spanish health insurers, Sanitas owns and operates its own hospital network. The Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja (Madrid) is the group's flagship – a JCI-accredited teaching hospital with full surgical, oncology, cardiology and maternity services. Sanitas La Zarzuela (north-west Madrid) and Sanitas CIMA (Barcelona) round out the proprietary chain, with strong reputations for elective surgery, obstetrics and outpatient diagnostics.

On top of its own hospitals, Sanitas holds partner agreements with Quirónsalud and HM Hospitales, giving members access to flagships such as Hospital Universitario HM Madrid, HM Sanchinarro, HM Montepríncipe and selected Quirónsalud facilities depending on product tier and province. We always check the cuadro médico for your specific address before issuing a policy.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Sanitas

  • Always check the Sanitas cuadro médico for your actual postcode before quoting – we do this for every client during the application call.
  • If you want a Sanitas-owned hospital (La Moraleja, La Zarzuela, CIMA Barcelona), confirm at quote stage – access depends on the product tier.
  • For visa applicants, request the certificado de cobertura at issue – Sanitas produces a clean, consulate-ready bilingual document.
  • Pay your premium annually rather than monthly where possible – Sanitas typically discounts annual payment.
  • Use the Mi Sanitas app to book consultations and video calls directly; for hospital admissions, the autorización pre-treatment route is faster.
  • If you travel frequently or split your year between countries, ask us about Sanitas Millón Más – it unlocks the wider Bupa Global footprint.
  • If you are autonomo, keep your Sanitas premium receipts – they are deductible against your AEAT IRPF up to the legal limit.
  • Add dental cover (Sanitas Dental) at issue rather than mid-term – it is meaningfully cheaper bundled than as a standalone add-on later.

Common Mistakes Expats Make with Sanitas Policies

  • Choosing the cheapest product tier without checking that the Sanitas-owned hospitals and Quirónsalud / HM facilities you actually want are included.
  • Going direct with the Spanish-language sales line instead of through an English-speaking broker – you lose the consultative fit-check and ongoing claims support.
  • Assuming copago and sin-copago cost the same – sin-copago suits heavy users, copago suits infrequent users.
  • Not flagging existing conditions at application – non-disclosure can void claims later, and Sanitas's underwriting is usually fair if you are upfront.
  • Letting the policy auto-renew at premium increase without a broker review – we re-shop every renewal.
  • For NLV applicants – submitting a basic policy to the consulate when the visa requires zero copayment for medically necessary care. We always quote the correct visa-compliant variant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sanitas accepted for the Non-Lucrative Visa and Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes. Sanitas routinely issues visa-compliant policies for both the NLV and the DNV, and produces a bilingual certificado de cobertura that consulates accept. We always quote the correct variant – full cover, no copayment on medically necessary care, no waiting periods on essential treatment – so the file passes review at the first attempt.
Who owns Sanitas, and is it financially stable?
Sanitas is wholly owned by Bupa, a British healthcare group founded in 1947 with operations in more than 190 countries and over 38 million customers worldwide. Bupa is a mutual-style provident association – it has no shareholders, so profits are reinvested into the business. Sanitas itself was founded in Madrid in 1954 and remains DGSFP-regulated like every other Spanish insurer.
What is the difference between Sanitas Más Salud, Más Familia, Millón Más and Premium?
Sanitas Más Salud is the mainstream product for individuals and couples – primary care, full hospitalisation, surgery, diagnostics and access to the Sanitas-owned hospital chain. Sanitas Más Familia bundles paediatrics, maternity and family-oriented benefits. Sanitas Millón Más raises the claims limit to €1m per process and adds wider Bupa Global access. Sanitas Premium is the high-end product with the broadest hospital list and concierge support.
Should I choose copago or sin-copago?
Copago plans have a lower annual premium but charge a small fee (typically a few euros) per consultation or test. Sin-copago has a higher premium but no per-visit charge. Rule of thumb: if you expect more than around 25-30 consultations a year across the household, sin-copago usually works out cheaper. For most families with children, sin-copago is the better value – and it is also the variant we use for NLV applications.
Can I be treated at Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja and CIMA Barcelona?
Yes – access to the Sanitas-owned hospital chain (Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja, Sanitas La Zarzuela in Madrid, and Sanitas CIMA in Barcelona) is one of the main reasons expats choose Sanitas. Access to Quirónsalud and HM Hospitales facilities is also included on most mainstream products, with the exact list depending on tier and province. We confirm the specific hospital you want is included before issuing the policy.
Is my Sanitas premium tax-deductible if I'm autonomo?
Yes. Spanish autonomos can deduct private health insurance premiums against IRPF up to the legal annual limit per insured person (with a higher limit for disability). The deduction also covers the autonomo's spouse and children under 25 living in the household. Keep the annual Sanitas premium certificate – we send it to you each year for your AEAT filing.
