The Legal Minimum — Designed for Older Cars and Tighter Budgets

Seguro a Terceros — basic third-party car insurance — is the minimum level of cover required by Spanish law for every vehicle registered with the DGT and driven on public roads. It pays for damage and injury you cause to other people: their car, their property, their medical bills, and their loss of earnings. It does not, however, cover any damage to your own vehicle.

For many expats living in Spain, Terceros is the sensible choice. If your car is older, has done high mileage, or has a low market value, paying for fully comprehensive cover (Todo Riesgo) can cost more in premiums each year than the car itself is worth. Terceros keeps you legal, compliant with the DGSFP framework, and on the road for the lowest possible price.

It's also a popular starting point for newcomers. If you've just bought a Spanish-plated runaround, or you're driving infrequently while you settle in, Terceros gives you a foothold — and you can upgrade to Terceros Ampliado or Todo Riesgo later if your circumstances change. We only insure Spanish-plated vehicles, never UK or EU plates.

What Seguro a Terceros Actually Covers

Terceros is built around third-party civil liability — the damage you cause to others. Here's a clear breakdown of what's included, what isn't, and the add-ons worth considering.

What Terceros Covers

Mandatory civil liability for bodily injury and property damage caused to other drivers, passengers, pedestrians and third-party property when you are at fault. This is the Spanish legal minimum.

What It Does NOT Cover

Damage to your own car, theft, fire, vandalism, glass breakage, natural events, or your own injuries. If you reverse into a wall or crash on an empty road, repairs come out of your pocket.

Bodily Injury Liability

Pays for medical treatment, rehabilitation, loss of earnings and compensation for people injured in an accident you caused — including passengers in your own car.

Property Damage Liability

Covers repair or replacement of other vehicles, walls, fences, street furniture, or any other property you damage. Useful for the small bumps that account for most Spanish urban claims.

Civil Liability Limits

Spanish law sets minimum sums for bodily injury and property damage, but most insurers offer significantly higher limits as standard. We'll confirm the figures on your specific quote.

Optional Add-Ons

You can bolt on No Claims Discount (NCD) protection, legal defence and claims management, and basic roadside assistance — keeping the policy lean but useful when you actually need it.

Who Should Choose Seguro a Terceros?

Terceros is the right answer in plenty of real-world situations expats face in Spain. Here's where it usually makes the most sense.

  • You drive an older Spanish-plated car worth less than a year or two of comprehensive premiums.
  • You've just bought a runaround for short trips, school runs, or the local shop and don't want to over-insure it.
  • You're a low-mileage driver who only takes the car out a few times a week.
  • Your car is paid off — there's no finance company requiring fully comprehensive cover.
  • You're new to Spain, still settling in, and want a starter policy you can upgrade later.
  • You park on private land or in a quiet residential area, reducing exposure to theft and vandalism.
  • You're confident in your driving record and willing to self-insure for own-vehicle damage.
  • You want to keep ITV-ready legal compliance without paying for cover you'll rarely use.

Common Mistakes Expats Make with Terceros

Terceros is straightforward — but only if you understand what you're buying. These are the misunderstandings that cause the most frustration at claim time.

  • Expecting Terceros to cover damage to your own car — it does not, in any circumstance.
  • Not declaring the vehicle accurately (mileage, main driver, parking location) and finding the policy contested later.
  • Assuming windscreen damage is included — it isn't, unless you add glass cover.
  • Driving a UK or EU-plated car on Terceros sold in Spain — Spanish policies are for Spanish-plated vehicles only.
  • Skipping NCD protection and losing years of discount after a single small claim.
  • Forgetting to upgrade once the car's value rises, you've made improvements, or your commute changes.

Basic Third-Party Insurance FAQs

Is Seguro a Terceros enough for my car?
It depends on the car's value and your situation. If your Spanish-plated vehicle is older, paid off and not worth thousands of euros, Terceros usually makes sense. If it's a newer car, financed, or you'd struggle to replace it from savings, Terceros Ampliado or Todo Riesgo is worth considering. We'll talk through both options before you commit.
Can I upgrade from Terceros to a higher tier later?
Yes. You can move up to Terceros Ampliado or Todo Riesgo at renewal, or sometimes mid-policy depending on the insurer. Many expats start on Terceros while they get to know Spanish driving, then upgrade once they're settled or buy a newer car.
Does Terceros cover my windscreen?
Not as standard. Basic Terceros excludes glass damage. Some insurers let you add glass cover as a small extra — well worth considering given how common cracked windscreens are on Spanish motorways. Ask us and we'll add it to your quote.
What's the minimum civil liability in Spain?
Spain sets statutory minimum sums insured for bodily injury and property damage under the compulsory motor insurance regime. In practice, most insurers offer cover well above the legal minimum as standard. We'll confirm the exact figures on your policy schedule.
Will Terceros cover me if someone else is driving my car?
Spanish motor policies cover the named drivers listed on the policy. If you want a partner, family member or occasional driver to be covered, they must be added as a declared driver. Lending the car to an undeclared driver can void cover at claim time.
Do I need Terceros if I only drive my car a few times a year?
Yes. Every car registered with the DGT in Spain must hold valid motor insurance at all times, regardless of how often it's driven. Even a parked, taxed and ITV-valid car still needs an active policy — Terceros is usually the cheapest way to stay legal.
