Visa Application Process

How to Apply for a Spanish Visa

Applying for a Spanish long-stay visa typically follows a defined process: choose the right route, prepare documentation (including apostille and translation), arrange health insurance, book a Consulate or BLS appointment, attend submission, and wait for decision. This guide walks through the steps for non-EU applicants.

Step 1: Choose the visa route

Identify which Spanish long-stay visa applies to your situation. See Spanish visa types explained.

Step 2: Prepare documentation

  • Application form for the chosen visa
  • Valid passport with at least 12 months remaining
  • Photos to specification
  • Supporting documents for the visa category
  • Criminal record certificate from country of residence (apostilled)
  • Medical certificate
  • Accommodation evidence in Spain

Step 3: Apostille and translation

Country-issued documents typically require apostille from the issuing country’s authority, then certified Spanish translation. Allow 4–8 weeks for both steps combined.

Step 4: Arrange health insurance

Spanish Consulates commonly request health insurance evidence as part of the visa file. For non-EU long-stay routes, Spanish-regulated visa-compliant cover is the typical route — cover from a Spanish-authorised insurer, sin copago, sin carencias, annual cover with proof of upfront payment.

Step 5: Book the appointment

Appointments for most Spanish long-stay visas are booked through BLS International (the Spanish government’s visa application centre partner) or directly with the Consulate, depending on country. See our regional BLS hubs: UK, USA, Canada.

Step 6: Attend submission

Attend the appointment with all documents, originals plus copies, photos, fees and biometric data. The submission centre forwards the file to the Spanish Consulate for decision.

Step 7: Wait for the decision

Processing typically takes several weeks to a few months. The Consulate may request additional information.

Step 8: After approval

  • Collect visa
  • Travel to Spain within validity period (typically 3 months from approval)
  • Register for TIE within 30 days of arrival at the Foreigners Office
  • Complete empadronamiento at the town hall
  • Open Spanish bank account and set up local life

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong visa route
  • Missing apostille or translation on supporting documents
  • Using non-compliant health insurance (travel insurance, home-country private)
  • Booking the wrong consulate (jurisdiction mismatch)
  • Late arrival at appointment
  • Not registering for TIE within 30 days of arrival
