Digital Nomad Visa Health Insurance for British Citizens in Spain
Applying for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa as a British citizen? If you are working remotely for a UK company, freelancing for clients outside Spain or running your own business remotely, you may need private health insurance or other suitable healthcare evidence, depending on your employment route and Social Security position. 247 Expat Insurance helps British applicants arrange suitable cover and certificate support in English.
Private Insurance, Social Security or Certificate of Coverage?
For Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, the health insurance route depends on how you apply.
Remote employees may sometimes be able to rely on social security coverage or a certificate of coverage, depending on their employment structure and the documents accepted for their application.
Self-employed applicants, freelancers, company owners and applicants who cannot evidence qualifying social security cover will normally need private health insurance that meets Spanish visa requirements.
Family members included in the application may also need suitable health cover, even where the main applicant is covered through a social security route. If you are not sure which route applies, we can help with private insurance where appropriate — and you should confirm social security or certificate-of-coverage questions with your immigration adviser.
Health Insurance for UK Citizens Applying for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa
This page is for British citizens who need healthcare evidence for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, including private health insurance where that is the right route. The DNV is designed for non-EU remote workers, and since Brexit British citizens apply as non-EU nationals. Healthcare evidence is one of the key parts of the application.
Where private health insurance is the correct route, the policy should be suitable for the Spanish visa and residency process. At 247 Expat Insurance, we help British applicants request private cover from a Spanish-authorised insurer — one registered with Spain’s insurance regulator, the DGSFP — where private insurance is the right route, explain NHS, GHIC and UK insurance questions clearly, and support the certificate documentation where required.
Why British Digital Nomad Visa Applicants Need Suitable Healthcare Evidence
For many UK applicants, healthcare evidence is part of the DNV file, and private health insurance may be required depending on the route. In practice this usually means:
- The DNV normally requires suitable healthcare evidence, which may be private insurance, Spanish Social Security or a certificate of coverage depending on the route
- A normal UK policy may not meet Spanish visa requirements
- The policy should provide cover in Spain
- No-copayment policies are normally safer for visa purposes
- The insurer should be authorised in Spain
- A certificate may be required for the application
Can You Use UK Health Insurance, the NHS or GHIC for the DNV?
NHS
The NHS does not provide private health insurance documentation for a Spanish DNV application.
GHIC
A GHIC is not the same as full private health insurance for a residency or visa file.
UK Private Medical Insurance
Some UK policies cover treatment abroad, but that does not automatically make them suitable for the Spanish DNV application.
If you already hold UK cover, tell us the details and we can help you check whether a Spanish policy is needed for your application.
Applying From the UK or From Inside Spain
Applying From the UK
You may need health insurance documentation for the Spanish consulate / BLS process.
Applying From Spain
If applying through the Spanish route, you may need certificate documentation for the immigration / UGE file.

What Private DNV Health Insurance Should Include Where Required
Where private cover is required, a DNV-suitable policy generally needs to:
Full Spain Cover
Comprehensive private health cover valid in Spain.
No-Copayment Option
A no-copayment policy is normally safer for visa purposes.
Spanish-Authorised Insurer
Issued by an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.
Certificate for Application
A certificate suited to the consulate or UGE file.
Correct Start Date
A start date aligned with your application.
Cover for Dependants
Cover for family members if they are included.
The Certificate and Proof of Cover, Where Private Insurance Is Used
Where private health insurance is the route you use, the document the consulate or immigration office reads is the insurance certificate. It should confirm a full private health policy with a Spanish-authorised insurer, valid in Spain, ideally with no copayments, and name each insured person. Keep your proof of payment with it, as consulates often want to see cover that is paid and in force.
Where you instead rely on Spanish Social Security or a certificate of coverage, the healthcare evidence is different, and your immigration adviser can confirm what your route needs. We arrange and prepare the certificate only where private insurance is the right route for you.
When to Sort Your Healthcare Evidence
Timing depends on where you apply. From the UK you apply through the Spanish consulate and its visa centre, usually BLS; from inside Spain you apply to the immigration office (UGE). Either way, have your healthcare evidence ready before your appointment or submission, because it forms part of the file.
Where private cover is your route, we can usually issue it quickly once we have your details, but it is best not to leave it to the last few days in case the certificate wording needs adjusting. Our visa-appointment insurance page explains getting the certificate ready in time.
Cover for Partners, Families and Dependants
Family members included in a DNV application usually need their own suitable healthcare evidence, even where the main applicant is covered through a Social Security route. Where private cover is used, each person should be named on the certificate. Tell us who is applying and we will help arrange cover for the people who need it, on the route that fits their situation.
Pre-existing Conditions and Underwriting
Where private health insurance is your route, pre-existing conditions are assessed case by case by the insurer, based on age and medical history, so the terms, any conditions and the premium depend on that assessment, and acceptance is never guaranteed. It is best to be accurate and complete about your medical history from the start, so the certificate you receive is one you can rely on.
Common Insurance Mistakes for British DNV Applicants
Mistakes that cause delays
- Assuming UK private medical insurance is automatically enough.
- Assuming a GHIC is enough.
- Using travel insurance.
- Choosing a policy with copayments without checking suitability.
- A policy start date that does not match the application.
- Not including dependants correctly.
- Leaving the certificate until the last minute.
We help you avoid these issues with private cover suited to the Digital Nomad Visa where private insurance is the right route. Visa decisions are always made by the Spanish authorities.
