Private Insurance, Social Security or Certificate of Coverage?

For Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, the health insurance route depends on how you apply.

Remote employees may sometimes be able to rely on social security coverage or a certificate of coverage, depending on their employment structure and the documents accepted for their application.

Self-employed applicants, freelancers, company owners and applicants who cannot evidence qualifying social security cover will normally need private health insurance that meets Spanish visa requirements.

Family members included in the application may also need suitable health cover, even where the main applicant is covered through a social security route. If you are not sure which route applies, we can help with private insurance where appropriate — and you should confirm social security or certificate-of-coverage questions with your immigration adviser.

For Canadian Remote Workers

Health Insurance for Canadian Citizens Applying for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa is designed for non-EU remote workers. Canadian applicants may need private health insurance as part of the application unless they are covered through another accepted route.

A Canadian employer plan or provincial health card is usually not suitable for the Spanish process. At 247 Expat Insurance, we help Canadian applicants request cover from a Spanish-authorised insurer, registered with Spain's insurance regulator, the DGSFP, where private insurance is the right route, and prepare the certificate you need — all in clear English.

The Requirement

Why Canadian Digital Nomad Visa Applicants Need Suitable Healthcare Evidence

  • The DNV is for non-EU remote workers
  • Suitable healthcare evidence is normally part of the application — private insurance, Spanish Social Security or a certificate of coverage, depending on your route
  • The policy should cover medical treatment in Spain
  • The insurer should be authorised to operate in Spain
  • No-copayment policies are normally safer for visa purposes
  • Travel insurance is not usually enough
A Common Mistake

Can Canadian Health Insurance Be Used for the Spanish DNV?

Many Canadian remote workers assume their existing cover will be accepted. In most cases it is not suitable for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa:

Canadian cover that usually is not suitable

  • Provincial healthcare (OHIP, MSP, RAMQ and similar) — for residents in Canada, not Spanish private cover.
  • Canadian employer medical plans — may not provide the right documentation for the visa.
  • Travel insurance — not designed for residence.
  • Credit card travel insurance — usually short-term.
  • Emergency-only international insurance — not the same as full private cover.
  • Short-stay visitor cover — not suitable for a residency application.

A Spanish private health insurance policy is normally the safest route. We can help explain the options for your situation.

The Certificate

The Certificate and Proof of Cover, Where Private Insurance Is Used

Where private health insurance is the route you use, the document the consulate or immigration office reads is the insurance certificate. It should confirm a full private health policy with a Spanish-authorised insurer, valid in Spain, ideally with no copayments, and name each insured person. Keep your proof of payment with it, as consulates often want to see cover that is paid and in force.

Where you instead rely on Spanish Social Security or a certificate of coverage, the healthcare evidence is different, and your immigration adviser can confirm what your route needs. We arrange and prepare the certificate only where private insurance is the right route for you.

Timing

When to Sort Your Healthcare Evidence

Timing depends on where you apply. From Canada you apply through the Spanish consulate responsible for your region; from inside Spain you apply to the immigration office (UGE). Either way, have your healthcare evidence ready before your appointment or submission, because it forms part of the file.

Where private cover is your route, we can usually issue it quickly once we have your details, but it is best not to leave it to the last few days in case the certificate wording needs adjusting. Our visa-appointment insurance page explains getting the certificate ready in time.

Couples & Families

Cover for Partners, Families and Dependants

Family members included in a DNV application usually need their own suitable healthcare evidence, even where the main applicant is covered through a Social Security route. Where private cover is used, each person should be named on the certificate. Tell us who is applying and we will help arrange cover for the people who need it, on the route that fits their situation.

Underwriting

Pre-existing Conditions and Underwriting

Where private health insurance is your route, pre-existing conditions are assessed case by case by the insurer, based on age and medical history, so the terms, any conditions and the premium depend on that assessment, and acceptance is never guaranteed. It is best to be accurate and complete about your medical history from the start, so the certificate you receive is one you can rely on.
