Digital Nomad Visa Health Insurance for Remote Workers in Spain

Many employed applicants assume the group health plan from their employer, or the insurance they hold at home, will be enough for the Digital Nomad Visa. In practice these are rarely written for a Spanish residence application: they may not provide full medical cover inside Spain, may carry copayments, or may come from an insurer not authorised to operate here.

Where private cover is the route, the evidence is specific: private medical cover in Spain, normally with no copayments, from an insurer authorised in Spain, plus certificate documentation prepared for the consulate or UGE file. A foreign employer’s policy is usually not the same as Spanish visa-suitable private health insurance, and some employee cases may instead rely on Spanish Social Security or an international Social Security certificate, so the correct route should be checked before buying cover. If private insurance is needed, employees normally arrange a separate Spanish policy for the visa.
