Insurance for Your Newly Spanish-Plated Spanish-Plated Car

At 247 Expat Insurance we specialise in cover for cars that have been fully imported into Spain and registered onto Spanish plates. The moment your matriculación is complete and Tráfico (DGT) issues your new Spanish registration number, we can have a policy in force — often the same day. This is the cover you need on day one of being legal on Spanish roads.

We do not write policies on UK plates, EU foreign plates or any non-Spanish registration. Spanish law requires every vehicle ordinarily kept in Spain to be matriculated onto Spanish plates and insured with a provider authorised to issue a Spanish policy. Driving on foreign plates beyond the permitted window can trigger fines, vehicle immobilisation and rejected claims — so our role begins where matriculación ends.

Once you have your ficha técnica, ITV pass, IEDMT receipt and the new Spanish permiso de circulación, send them through and we’ll set up cover that protects you legally and financially from your very first kilometre on Spanish plates — whether the car came from London, Lisbon, Berlin or further afield.

Cover Options for Spanish-Plated Cars on Spanish Plates

Whether your import is a five-year-old family hatchback from the UK or a higher-value vehicle brought from elsewhere in the EU, we tailor the policy to the matriculated value and how you use the car in Spain.

Terceros (Third Party)

The Spanish legal minimum. Covers damage and injury you cause to other people, vehicles and property — the baseline required from day one of Spanish plates.

Terceros + Fire & Theft

Adds protection against theft, attempted theft and fire damage — sensible for newly Spanish-plated cars parked on the street or away from home.

Todo Riesgo (Comprehensive)

Full cover including own-damage, with or without an excess (franquicia). Often the right fit for higher-value or recently homologated imports.

Roadside Assistance

24/7 breakdown cover across Spain and Europe, including recovery, on-the-spot repairs and a hire vehicle while yours is off the road.

Replacement Vehicle

A like-for-like courtesy car after an accident or theft so you’re not stranded while parts are sourced — particularly useful for right-hand drive imports.

Agreed Value or Market Value

Choose how the car is valued at claim. Agreed value suits rare, modified or Vehículo Histórico imports; market value suits everyday cars.

Who This Cover Is For

If your car is already on Spanish plates after being imported, or matriculación is days away, this is the policy you need lined up.

  • British expats who have shipped a UK car to Spain and have just completed homologación, ITV and matriculación.
  • EU citizens who have brought a vehicle from France, Germany, the Netherlands or Italy and switched it onto Spanish plates.
  • Retirees relocating to the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol or Balearics who have finally finished the import paperwork.
  • Returning Spaniards who imported a car bought while living abroad and have now registered it locally with their NIE/DNI.
  • Owners of older imports being registered as Vehículo Histórico for everyday and weekend use on Spanish plates.
  • Families who bought a car in the UK or EU specifically to drive to Spain and matriculate on arrival.
  • Buyers who have purchased an already-imported, already-Spanish-plated car from another expat and need to switch the policy into their name.
  • Anyone whose temporary foreign-plate period in Spain is ending and who needs cover ready the day Tráfico issues the new matrícula.

Common Mistakes When Insuring an Spanish-Plated Car in Spain

The import-and-insure journey trips up a lot of expats. These are the issues we see most often — and how to avoid them.

  • Trying to insure a UK or EU foreign-plated car with us — we can’t. You must complete matriculación first; cover starts the day Spanish plates are issued.
  • Underestimating homologación. Without the correct ficha técnica reducida or homologación individual, the ITV will fail and matriculación stalls.
  • Booking the ITV before homologación is sorted — right-hand drive UK cars in particular need headlight, speedometer and emissions checks signed off first.
  • Forgetting the IEDMT (special registration tax) and Tasas declarations — both are required before Tráfico will issue the permiso de circulación.
  • Assuming No Claims Discount transfers automatically. We can usually recognise UK or EU NCD, but it must be evidenced in writing from your previous insurer.
  • Letting the previous foreign policy lapse before Spanish cover is bound — never drive on Spanish plates uninsured, even for a day.

Spanish-Plated Car Insurance FAQs

Can you insure my UK-plated car?
No. We only insure cars registered in Spain on Spanish plates. While your car is still on UK plates (or any foreign plates) we cannot write a policy for it. As soon as matriculación is complete and Tráfico issues your new Spanish registration, send us the documents and we’ll have cover in force the same day.
How long does matriculación take in Spain?
For a straightforward EU import with good paperwork, allow four to eight weeks. Right-hand drive UK cars or anything needing homologación individual can take two to four months. The process runs through your gestor, an ITV station and Tráfico (DGT), with IEDMT and Tasas paid along the way. We’ll insure you the day Spanish plates are issued — not before.
Do you cover the import or shipping process?
No. Marine transit, shipping, customs and the matriculación process itself sit outside our motor policies. We pick up at the point your car is legally on Spanish plates — that’s where Spanish motor insurance begins.
What if I sell my Spanish-plated car before matriculación is finished?
Then it remains on foreign plates and is not something we can insure. The buyer will need to handle their own foreign-plate situation, and you’ll need a Spanish-plated vehicle of your own before we can quote you. We’re happy to be on standby for whichever vehicle you end up keeping on Spanish plates.
Will my UK or EU No Claims Discount transfer?
Usually yes — most Spanish insurers we work with recognise UK and EU NCD, provided you can supply a dated letter from your previous insurer confirming claim-free years. Send it over with your quote request and we’ll apply it to your new Spanish policy.
Can you insure a Vehículo Histórico import?
Yes, once the car carries Spanish historic plates after matriculación as Vehículo Histórico. We can arrange agreed-value cover and limited-use policies that suit older imports being driven occasionally on Spanish roads.
