In-Depth Guide
Insurance for Canadians in Spain — The Complete Picture
Canada's relationship with Spain has grown considerably in recent years. Driven by Spain's comparatively low cost of living, outstanding climate, superb food, and genuine quality of life, Canadians — particularly from high-cost cities such as Toronto and Vancouver — have been moving to Spain in growing numbers. The Non-Lucrative Visa and the Digital Nomad Visa have both made the transition more accessible, and Spain's vibrant expat communities welcome Canadians warmly.
But moving from Canada to Spain means navigating an entirely different insurance system. Canadian provincial health plans, Canadian car insurance histories, and Canadian home insurance policies do not translate directly. At 247 Expat Insurance, we specialise in helping Canadians understand what they need, find the right products, and get everything arranged in plain English — or French, where needed — seven days a week.
Provincial Health Plans — Why They Don't Work in Spain
Canada's provincial health insurance programmes — OHIP (Ontario), BC MSP (British Columbia), RAMQ (Quebec), AHCIP (Alberta), and the equivalents in every other province — are domestic plans that operate within Canada's publicly funded healthcare system. Once you leave Canada for an extended period, most provinces will terminate or suspend your coverage. OHIP, for instance, typically terminates coverage after you have been out of Ontario for more than 212 days in any 12-month period.
Regardless of any remaining Canadian coverage, your provincial plan will not be accepted by the Spanish consulate as proof of health insurance for a Non-Lucrative Visa or Digital Nomad Visa application. Spanish consulates require a policy from a DGSFP-registered insurer that provides full healthcare coverage in Spain with no copayments. Canadian provincial plans do not meet this definition.
Key requirement: For the NLV, your health insurance policy must have no copayments — meaning you pay nothing at the point of care. This is a specific Spanish consulate requirement and differs fundamentally from most Canadian private supplemental insurance plans, which typically include copayments or deductibles.
The Non-Lucrative Visa for Canadians
The NLV is the most popular route for Canadians moving to Spain who are not planning to work locally. It suits retirees, people with investment income, landlords receiving rental income, and anyone who can demonstrate sufficient passive income to support themselves in Spain without local employment.
Canadian NLV applications are made at the Spanish consulate in the jurisdiction where you reside. The main consulates in Canada are in Toronto (covering Ontario and Atlantic Canada), Vancouver (covering British Columbia and western Canada), and Montreal (covering Quebec and francophone Canada). Each consulate has its own specific requirements, appointment systems, and processing timescales. Our team works regularly with Canadians applying through all three consulates.
The Digital Nomad Visa — Spain's Welcome to Remote-Working Canadians
Introduced in 2023, Spain's Digital Nomad Visa was partly inspired by the massive growth in remote work following the pandemic. It suits Canadians who work remotely for non-Spanish employers — as employees or freelancers — and want legal residency status in Spain. The visa offers a pathway to permanent residency and eventually Spanish citizenship for those who stay long-term. Private health insurance meeting the same no-copayment standard is required for the DNV application.
Car Insurance for Canadians in Spain
Car insurance is compulsory in Spain, just as it is in Canada. However, there are two important considerations for Canadians. First, your driving licence: a licence issued outside the EU is valid for driving in Spain for a maximum of six months, counted from the date you acquire normal residence here. Canadian driving licences cannot currently be exchanged for the Spanish equivalent, so once that six-month period ends most Canadian residents must obtain a Spanish licence by passing the DGT theory and practical tests. The theory test can be sat in English. While you are still driving on your Canadian licence, remember that a licence not written in Spanish must either be accompanied by an official translation or be presented together with an International Driving Permit, which serves as that translation and must always be carried with the original licence. Spain only permits an exchange where an agreement with the issuing country is in force, and you can check the current position on the DGT list of countries with an exchange agreement.
Second, your Canadian driving history. Unlike some countries, Canada does not have a standardised "no-claims bonus" system, but most Spanish insurers will consider a letter from your Canadian insurer confirming your claims history. We help Canadians navigate this process to obtain the most competitive premium possible.
Home Insurance for Canadian Expats in Spain
Spain is enormously popular with Canadian property buyers, attracted by pricing that compares extremely favourably with Canadian real estate markets. Whether you're buying a sunny apartment in Valencia, a villa in Andalusia, or a coastal property on the Costa Blanca, home insurance in Spain is essential and, in many cases, required by your mortgage lender.
Spanish home insurance typically consists of buildings cover (continente) and contents cover (contenido). Holiday homes or properties left unoccupied for extended periods need specialist policies that account for this — standard policies often include unoccupancy clauses. We arrange home insurance that works for how Canadians actually use their Spanish properties.
Travel Insurance for Canada-Based and Spain-Based Canadians
Once you are a resident in Spain, your travel insurance needs change. You will want annual multi-trip cover that operates from Spain — covering trips back to Canada, travel across Europe, and holidays further afield. Many Canadians also maintain some cover for trips back to Canada, particularly where they may need access to Canadian healthcare for pre-existing conditions. We can help you find a policy that covers your specific travel patterns.
Life and Funeral Insurance for Canadian Expats in Spain
Life insurance is available for Canadian residents in Spain, either through international policies or Spain-based products. Funeral and repatriation cover is particularly relevant for Canadians — international repatriation from Spain to Canada involves significant costs and logistical complexity, and having a dedicated policy in place gives your family clarity and financial protection.
