The Spanish Visado de Residencia No Lucrativa (NLV) is the long-stay residency route for non-EU applicants who can support themselves financially in Spain without working locally. Every NLV file submitted at a Spanish consulate or BLS International application centre must include private health insurance — and the requirements are far stricter than a standard expat policy. Consulate caseworkers do not approve travel insurance, ACA-style cover, or NHS reciprocal arrangements. They want a certificado de seguro from a Spanish-authorised insurer.
Travel insurance is usually not suitable for NLV. Travel policies cover emergencies for a short trip, exclude routine and chronic care, and almost always carry exclusions a consulate may not accept on a one-year residency application. The NLV asks for cover that mirrors the Spanish public health system: outpatient, inpatient, emergency, specialist consultations, diagnostics, surgery, maternity where applicable, and repatriation — with no annual cap that looks like a "Schengen minimum". This is full private medical insurance, not trip cover.
The certificate itself must come from an insurer registered with Spain's Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones (DGSFP). This is the type of insurer commonly used for NLV applications. 247 Expat Insurance places cover with the DGSFP-registered insurers commonly used for NLV applications — a Spanish-regulated insurer and Caser — and we issue the bilingual EN/ES certificate that slots straight into your modelo EX-01 application file.
The exact wording on the certificado de seguro is what the consulate reads. Missing one or more of these points can result in additional document requests, delays or issues with the application. We build every NLV policy against this checklist.
Zero copago at point of service. The applicant pays nothing for GP visits, specialists, diagnostics, A&E or hospital stays — this is one of the most common insurance-related issues we see.
No carencias on the policy. Surgery, maternity, specialist care and pre-existing conditions are live from day one — not after the standard 6, 8 or 10-month waits.
Medical repatriation and, where applicable, repatriation of remains must be explicitly listed on the certificate — not buried in a separate travel rider.
Cover must be unlimited or explicitly equivalent to the Spanish public health service. No annual sub-limits, no €30,000 Schengen-style cap — that wording belongs on travel insurance, not on an NLV policy.
Minimum 12 months of cover from your intended date of arrival in Spain, with no gap between the consulate submission date and your entry. Short or back-dated policies may not be accepted.
The certificado de seguro is issued in English and Spanish, on insurer letterhead, naming each applicant — ready for the BLS portal upload or in-person submission at the consulado.
Our NLV clients come from across the UK, Ireland, North America and beyond. The visa route changes by passport and consulate, but the insurance standard does not.
We see the same handful of insurance errors trigger NLV refusals every month. Each one is avoidable — and each one costs an applicant another four to six-week wait for a new consulate slot.
We are a specialist Spanish-resident broker, not a generic comparison site. NLV certificates are what we issue every working day — with the wording the consulate commonly requires.
Every policy we place is with an insurer registered under Spain's DGSFP — a Spanish-regulated insurer and Caser — the regulator the consulate verifies on every NLV file.
Native English speakers handle your file from first quote to certificate delivery. No translation friction, no misread emails, no surprises at the consulate window.
NLV consulate slots are scarce and rarely fall in office hours. We answer WhatsApp, phone and email seven days a week — including weekends and bank holidays.
Certificates are often issued within 1 business day once the policy is approved and payment is completed. Tight appointment? Most NLV applicants have the bilingual certificado de seguro within 1 business day.
We know the standards at London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto — including the BLS International submission portals and the in-person consulate windows.
Direct lines to Sanitas, Caser underwriters — faster amendments, faster reissues, no broker chain between you and the people who can fix a wording the night before your appointment.
From the first WhatsApp message to the bilingual certificate landing in your inbox, you deal with one Spanish-resident broker who actually understands the NLV. We have placed cover for retirees in Florida applying through Miami, families in Surrey routing through BLS London, couples in Dublin submitting in person at Merlyn Park, and dual nationals in Toronto re-establishing residencia — the geography changes, but the consulate's evidentiary standard for the NLV does not. We keep that standard front and centre on every certificate we issue.
Most NLV holders pair their consulate health cover with one or more of these once they land in Spain.
